Blond hair/blue eyes + Fiery red hair/bright green eyes = Jet black hair and dark brown eyes?

rbygrl asked:

Can red haired, green eyed mother and blond haired, blue eyed father have a black haired, dark brown eyed child? I am questioning who my grandfather was. I don’t see how this could be possible since both the above hair and eye colors are recessive. I think. Thanks

Yes it is possible. If your maternal grandmas had this coloring it is possible. If both parents are recessive, it means they are recessive because one parents recessive dominant. It is like when you have, not to be rude.. But african americans with dark skin and black hair and dark brown eyes. But then you have someone like Vanessa Williams who has blue eyes. But if you are that concerned maybe ask your parents or your grandmother.

yess,i mean the brown eyed kid could have gotten it form his grandparents.
i have two friends who have green eyes and light brown hair and neither of their parents do.(EDIT) one got it from their grandfather and the other from her great grandmother, like her uncle.

Yo maria has made one of the classic mistakes in genetics. It is very easy for two brown eyed parents to have blue eyed children because they can both be carrying the recessive trait. However, if someone is blue-eyed, they do NOT carry the dominant trait. So two blue-eyed parents cannot have a brown-eyed child except under rare conditions. I would say that by the description you gave, it is FAR more likely that your granny was getting around. I have done genealogical research and if I found such a situation, I would put a very strong question mark next to the father of that child. I might even be inclined to designate that father as “unknown,” with an explanation.

Yo maria, I hope your friend didn’t get her green eyes from her UNCLE!

There are two possibilities. One is called incomplete penetration, in which someone with a dominant gene does not express it but instead displays the result of the corresponding recessive gene. The other possibility is that the milkman had brown eyes and black hair.
