Now instead i do somethings different, You can by mascara that has like 2 sides, one is to extend and the other one is to darken, i use that all the time, ALSO, for yur eyeliner problems, use liquid. It looks more mature and defined. Keep on using lighter shades or maybe use a golden brownish colour! Hope that helps ;) I had the same problem! An awesome tip I found out is that if you put a slightly lighter foundation on your eyelids and a creme or whitish eyeshadow below your brow it lightens up your face it also makes your eyelashes stickout even if you are just wearing a little mascara.
